France’s political map has been redrawn overnight. The National Rally party, led by Marine Le Pen and her protégé Jordan Bardella, won over 33% of the vote in the first round of the snap parliamentary elections. This result marks a historic surge for the far-right—sending waves across Europe and shaking President Emmanuel Macron’s grip on power.
The snap elections were called by Macron after his party’s heavy loss in the European Parliament elections. But the move backfired. The left-wing coalition (NFP) came second, and Macron’s centrist alliance slipped into third place.
If the National Rally wins an outright majority in the second round, it could lead to France’s first far-right prime minister in modern history. Critics fear this could impact immigration policies, EU relationships, and even press freedoms.
Macron has urged voters to form a “Republican Front” to block the far-right in Round 2. Meanwhile, Le Pen and Bardella are celebrating what they call a “victory for the silent majority.”
The second round vote is set for July 7, and the outcome could reshape France’s future and influence EU politics at large.
